In a world that is constantly redefining its ideals and standards, gender’s everchanging definition needs to be studied and researched. I think it is important to have an absolute truth, especially when dealing with something as significant in someone’s identity like gender. What I related to the most was reading, “We model what we see.” The differences in sex roles and gender roles stand out as well.
In one of the assignment questions for this chapter, we were to analyze our past environment of sex/gender roles, and I absolutely adored writing out and being able to see what might have once influenced me in my view of those roles. I was able to weave out the bad and see the good influences. Discerning your past can be difficult, but it is so rewarding in gathering an accurate view on yourself and the world around you.
In a future teaching role, I hope to portray a precise and truthful depiction and description of healthy gender and sex roles. In my classroom, I will not tolerate someone devalue another’s identity. Dispelling stereotypes and loving each other in a new, tangible way can change a learning environment for so much good. Opening doors for people to be loved despite any fear would create a place of freedom. In order to get there, we must be patient, and we must teach life lessons even more so than a specific lesson, because, “We model what we see.”
