Home has always been a person to me, not a structure. Usually, when I look at photographs of my friends, nostalgia hits me like a train. I can easily be overcome with sadness of long forgotten days of adventures. When I think about change over time, I often crave for once was instead of what is now. My series reveals my desire to transform memories into something long lasting and tangible. These memories are the home I once knew.
The concept of home is shown by the figures of each piece, excluding piece 7, which is a transitioning piece that focusses on a place and a painting technique rather than a person. Pieces 1-6 emphasizes the layering of photographs, representing how memories are layered upon each other. I photographed my friends with upside down pictures being projected onto them of a memory with that specific person. Small photographs are placed on the walls behind the figures, and there is a sentimental, nostalgic, blue undertone to the first 6 pieces. Using camera upscura techniques as mastered by Abelardo Morell, I flipped the projected image upside down, signifying how I remember the emotions from events better than the actual happening of the event. Piece 6 is where I transitioned from digital to analogue, because there was a certain rawness of material I could not portray through the digital world. In piece 7, I continued using the texture of piece 6, but decided to use paint to portray the emotions of my memories. Pieces 8 and 9 were experiments with photo transferring while including the paint style of the previous piece. Piece 9 is where I photo shopped the faces with mountains or trees, which demonstrate how places are people and people are places and how I cannot have one without the other. The paint at the bottom represent my emotions about the people and the memory.
